Once known as the “Pearl of the Antilles”, Haiti once produced much of the world’s coffee, sugar, cotton, and tobacco.

Centuries of deforestation have taken a toll on the soil. Erosion and the loss of nutrients in the soil make it challenging to grow enough food.

According to the UN, “…farmers only produce 40 percent of Haiti’s food, creating an untenable food situation through which Haiti has become dependent on imports.”
